Wood Species

Wood is one of the most versatile, beautiful, and accommodating flooring materials that is available to the consumer. Wood is immune to the swings of fashion. It never goes out of style. A wood floor is equally at home in a formal dining room and a casual family room. Go to the National Wood Flooring Association "Design A Room" where you can insert multiple flooring choices into different rooms and see the results.

There are over 100 species of wood that are suitable for wood flooring. Each species differs in color, grain, hardness, durability, availability and price. It may be quite confusing when trying to decide which species works best in your situation.

The chart below may help you in your decision. The species shown have been ranked as compared to Northern Red Oak, the most common choice for residential wood flooring. Click on the image to view the full details of the wood type.
